The greenest raincoat award must surely go to the new Spud Coat. Made from bioplastic which is derived from potato starch and other natural resources it’s the perfect companion on a rainy day out or for those wet summer festivals.

The Spud Coat
The spud coat is 100% biodegradable and compostable and even has a small clay ball with seeds in it so that once it’s life cycle is over it can be buried in the ground and hey presto the seeds will grow into plants. There’s no need for this item of clothing to end up in landfill-simply bury after use.

A team of researchers at our very own Warwick University have come up with the first racing car designed and made from sustainable and renewable materials – dubbed the WorldFirst project. Components made from plant materials form the cars framework – with the steering wheel and seat derived from root vegetables, flax fibre and soya beans. The engine uses biodeisel derived from waste chocolate and vegetable oil….
And does it actually drive? Worldfirst attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July this year and were successful in taking it out on the track for timed runs, still managing 125 kmph around corners!
As chocoholics though we do wonder where the waste chocolate come from? Anyone in the know please drop us a line as we’d hate to see any more chocolate go to waste.

Each year, millions of shipping containers are left to sit in shipping and storage yards all over the world.
In another clever and unusual story of re-use, people looking to build a home and make an environmental difference have been converting some of these empty shipping containers into houses!

You can leave them in their ‘natural’ state or repaint them, stack them, even cut doors and windows out of the sides or ends. In both London and New Zealand resourceful entrepeneurs have even created holiday homes and hotels from them.

The Sky Planter, designed in New Zealand has quite literally turned gardening on it’s head! The innovatively designed planter allows you to grow plants upside down in your home or office.

The planter is suspended from the ceiling which makes it ideal for a smaller space – as well as making a great talking point! It’s not only an innovative design in terms of contemporary interiors but it’s eco friendly too as it doesn’t need lots of water. Using an internal reservoir system which supplies water directly to the plants roots, you only need to water the Sky Planter once a month.
Just don’t ask us how the soil stays in!

If you liked our article entitled The Perfect Pullover For Your Eco Pooch you’ll love this month’s My Alter Eco story as it involves pets, renewable clothing and inventive creations.

Erwan Fichou, a French photographer is currently working on a project which captures pet owners modelling clothing made from the hair of their very own pet pooches. From coats, cardigans, waistcoats and scarves the clothing is made by spinning the dog’s hair into yarn which is then knitted into these warm and cuddly items of clothing.
We love creative recycling here at GreenFinder but suggest that if you do have pet allergies don’t try this at home!

An American delivery company have managed to save 32,000 tonnes of CO2 by employing quite an ususual energy saving measure on their journeys. Their ‘no left turn’ programme has meant they have cut 30 million miles off delivery routes and saved 3 million gallons of petrol.

The ‘no left turn’ programme ensures that drivers do not waste time trying to cross traffic leading to savings of time, money, energy and of course CO2.
For decades the company has been planning journeys with a series of loops and as few left turns as they can manage although it is only in the last few years that internally developed technology has ensured that their computer generated journeys really put the plan into action.
